Master Degree Madness

Yesterday we put a notice in a website, looking for a computer operator. In less than 24 hours we got about 50 applications (very good), so there's plenty of interest. However what stroke me was the number of people with a master degree that applied for a computer operator job. About half of them had a master degree of some kind, such as:

  • Master of Science, Faculty of Justice.
  • Master of Science, Sociology of Social Development.
  • Master degree on Computer Science.
  • Master of Science, Faculty of History and Geography, International Relations.
  • Master of Science, Faculty of History and Geography, Cultural Heritage.

I find this totally non-sense. Lots of people spending lots of money on degrees they don't like, don't need and will never use. It's a mass madness affecting almost everyone here in Albania and there's no stop in sight.  With this trend continuing, soon we'll have more people with master degrees "per capita" that any other country in the World. And as it happens on a "free market" economy with rising interest there's an huge increase on business (I'm not calling them Universities on purpose) that are selling master certificates. Good luck to them :)

On a serious note, I'm thinking that in new notices I should add a condition "Master degrees will disqualify you". Maybe it will help someone focus on learning something useful, instead of wasting years on getting useless master degree certificates.
